WHAT WE DO

Founded in 2015, the Montana State Parks Foundation serves as the philanthropic partner of the State Parks division of the Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks agency. Montana's state parks stand out in the rocky mountain west, leading the region in both the number of parks (56) and visitor attendance, with a record 3.4 million people exploring these natural treasures in 2023. Despite these impressive numbers, Montana's state parks face significant underfunding which leads to staffing shortages, delayed maintenance, and limited capacity for park enhancements and programming. The Montana State Parks Foundation was established to support the parks through financial contributions, advocacy and outreach in response to these challenges.

The Montana State Parks Foundation is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of Montana's 55 State Parks. We strive to ensure that these outdoor havens remain accessible, safe, and imbued with historical significance and environmental conservation by helping fund projects that the State Parks could not afford to do on their own. Simply put, our mission is to make our State Parks the absolute best they can be.

SUPPORTS THE PARKS IN DIVERSE WAYS

We work in close partnership with the parks to pinpoint projects of high priority that need financial support or other forms of assistance to become a reality. Our projects fall into several categories; Park Improvements  (trail and facility maintenance, habitat restoration, etc), History, Culture and Education (historical preservation, research, educational materials, events, etc) New and Growing Parks (land acquisitions, community outreach), Park Accessibility (installing adaptive recreation equipment, ADA and universal design upgrades) and Building Advocates (introducing volunteers to action and advocacy through volunteer work)
